What’s up First Cut gang? I am outside of AMC Norwalk with a quick out-of-theater reaction for the new Glen Powell-starring movie, How to Make a Killing from A24. And yeah, it’s a really fun, entertaining movie that really addresses, you know, the same old things that we’ve been seeing about capitalism in movies lately—you know, ‘eat the rich,’ all that kind of stuff.
The movie was written and directed by John Patton Ford, who did Emily the Criminal, and this movie is, you know, full of crime. I mean, if you’ve seen the trailer, it follows Glen Powell—he realizes he has this inheritance to this fortune, but there’s a lot of family members in the way, so he kind of has to lay them out. Which is crazy because the genre kind of evolved from, ‘Oh yeah, maybe it’s okay to kill rich people, maybe not,’ to just like a full-heart embrace of it, which is like kind of interesting.
You know, like back in the day, it was like Triangle of Sadness or like Parasite where it was a little bit more morally ambiguous, but I feel like movies like No Other Choice, movies like this one, kind of relish in this gleefulness for killing. What’s fun about these ‘rich people’ kind of plots is that we get a lot of fun characters and a fun ensemble. Of course, we get like Topher Grace in a fun role; Margaret Qualley is kind of like the femme fatale opposite from Glen Powell the entire movie, so that’s kind of fun. Ed Harris, Zach Woods from Silicon Valley… it’s a really fun ensemble and it’s a pretty fun movie.
I would say it’s not nothing that’s super special; it’s not something that’s going to be an Oscar contender or in an awards kind of thing, but it is a really fun comedy thriller that’s right in A24’s wheelhouse. With that being said, y’all let me know if you’re excited to see How to Make a Killing this weekend. I’m always having fun with Glen Powell; he’s a good dude, he’s a fun actor. Looks a little bit like my boy Mikey—like he’s like a white version of my boy Mikey. So salute to Glen Powell, man. We’ll see y’all next time on First Cut. Peace
