Alien Earth tries to do a lot. The series tackles massive themes of the future of capitalism, the power of memories, and the true face of evil. While it succeeds in presenting compelling conversations in some areas, its failures with tone, motivation, and some strange decisions in others, create for overall underwhelming series.
However, the saving grace of the series was, by far, Babou Ceesay in his role of the unrelenting cyborg, Morrow. Babou Ceesay was incredible. He showcases an incredible amount of range, by giving Morrow a staggering fearless presence while, also, demonstrating a genuine sincerity to him. Morrow’s interactions with Kirsh were, especially, memorable with a rivalry that was brewing from the start. Every moment with them on screen elevated this intriguing duel of personalities and motivations. The cyborg confronting the synthetic. Similar in many ways but different at their core. Does Morrow’s last grip on humanity make him a superior being? Or does Kirsh’s detachment give him more clarity?
Babou Ceesay made every episode better, with unforgettable moments, and an energy that was captivating. The touches of gray the character had were so well handled and presented. Every decision felt intentional and flowed from the character right from the start. Although Alien Earth struggled in some creative choices and concepts, the addition of Morrow was a briliant one. The density to his character and the powerful performance from Babou Ceesay made the entire season worth it.
